Do I need to be in shape to do jiu jitsu? +
In one word — no. Jiu-jitsu is for all body types. If your goal is to get in better shape, 10th Planet Ventura is a great place to start.
Am I too old for jiu jitsu? +
Absolutely not. We work with students from age 7 to 67 with a wide range of fitness levels. All exercises, drills, and sparring can be tailored to fit your goals.
Do I need a special uniform to train at 10th Planet Ventura? +
Not for your first day. Comfortable workout clothing — shorts, t-shirts, rashguards — works perfectly. We are a no-gi academy, so no gi is required.
How does a typical class work? +
We start with a light dynamic warm-up, then move straight into teaching. Students continue warming up as they drill techniques. After about 50 minutes we line up for a class photo. The remaining time is what we call Murder Practice — open roll for those who want to keep going at their own pace.
What is the belt system at 10th Planet? +
We follow the standard BJJ belt system colors. Adults: White, Blue, Purple, Brown, Black. Kids: White → Gray-White → Gray → Gray-Black → Yellow-White → Yellow → Yellow-Black → Orange-White → Orange → Orange-Black → Green-White → Green → Green-Black. We don't use stripes or wear belts during class because we don't train in the gi.
